  • Mongolia has a rich history dating all the way back to about 500,000 BCE, when the first humans came to the area

    • Many attacks, invasions, and wars against China and Korea followed

    • Genghis Khan was the leader of the Mongol Empire until his death (1227)

    • In 1919, China invaded

      • White Russian Army drove the Chinese army out of Ulaanbaatar in 1921. This weakened any political ties between the countries.

        • In 1924, Russia helped turn Mongolia into a communist country and it officially became known as Mongolian People’s Republic. 

    • On October 20th, 1945, China lost all control over the area known to most as Outer Mongolia, and the communist government was strengthened more.

      • ​In 1989, the communist government began to crumble and the country’s leaders slowly transitioned into democracy.

      • In 2008, violent protests erupted in Ulaanbaatar with protesters claiming that the recent election for the role of the prime minister was rigged. But these protests no longer occur as of 2012 when a new leader was elected.
