Getting Around

Especially in the big city of Ulaanbaatar, rental cars and Jeeps are often times unavailable. On this page, you'll find some alternatives to a rental car.

Shared Minivan Service

A taxi that is shared among strangers. Best for travelling short distances. Warnings: These minivan drivers will not leave from where they’ve stopped until their cars are packed full. Not just all the seats are full: packed full with people hanging out.

Hired Driver

The taxi driver you hire will most likely take you anywhere you wish to go in a large car or minivan- this is the most common form of public transport in Mongolia: hiring a private driver to drive you to where you want to go. This person will stay and wait for you in their car for the whole day while you go out to sightsee.

Taxi

While Mongolia has about 30,000 miles of highways, only about one tenth of those roads are paved, so the taxi becomes one of the most convenient forms of transportation. Warnings: the taxis will only stay within city borders (with some flexibility here and there), so you’ll have to make other arrangements if you want to leave the city.
